What to Do During an Electrical Emergency in Phoenix (A Homeowner's Guide)

Hi there, Oliver Electric here with more information to help you learn more. Let me start with the most important thing I can tell you: if you smell smoke, see sparks, or feel a buzz from an outlet, get out of the room first and call us second. Your safety always comes before anything else.

I've been a Phoenix electrician for almost 20 years. In that time, I've answered a lot of late-night calls from scared homeowners who didn't know what to do. The good news is that most electrical emergencies have clear warning signs, and you can handle them safely if you know what to look for.

Here's your simple, step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Spot the Signs of a Real Emergency

Not every electrical issue is an emergency. A flickering light bulb? Annoying, but it can wait. A breaker that trips once? Probably nothing big. But these signs mean you need help right now:

  • You smell burning plastic, smoke, or a sharp electric smell.
  • You see sparks coming from an outlet, switch, or panel.
  • An outlet, switch, or wall feels hot to the touch.
  • You hear buzzing, crackling, or popping from your panel.
  • Your power keeps going out for no clear reason.
  • You see exposed wires after a storm or accident.
  • Water has touched your outlets, panel, or wiring.

If any of these are happening, treat it as a real emergency. Don't wait until morning. Don't "see if it gets better." Take action now.

Step 2: Cut the Power If You Can Do It Safely

The fastest way to stop most electrical emergencies is to shut off the power at the main breaker. This is the big switch at the top of your electrical panel.

To do this safely:

  1. Stand on something dry, like a wood board or rubber mat. Never touch the panel with wet hands or wet feet.
  2. Use one hand only. Keep the other one in your pocket. (This is an old electrician trick to keep electricity from running across your chest.)
  3. Flip the main breaker to "OFF."
  4. Step back and don't touch anything else.

If the panel itself is sparking, smoking, or wet, don't touch it. Get everyone out of the house and call 911 first, then call us.

Step 3: Stay Away from Water and Wires

Water and electricity are a deadly combo. If a pipe burst or a monsoon flooded your garage, never walk through standing water that might be touching outlets or wires. Even a small puddle can carry enough current to seriously hurt you.

Same goes for fallen power lines outside. Always assume they are live. Stay at least 30 feet back and call APS or SRP right away.

Step 4: Call a 24-Hour Phoenix Electrician

Once you and your family are safe, it's time to call in the pros. This is not the moment for a handyman or a YouTube fix. Electrical emergencies need a licensed electrician with the right tools and training.

At Oliver Electric, we offer fast 24/7 emergency electrical services across the Phoenix Valley. We respond around the clock to homes in Buckeye, Glendale, Surprise, Goodyear, Peoria, Scottsdale, and the rest of the metro area. When you call, you talk to a real person, not a robot.

Step 5: Get a Real Diagnosis (Not a Band-Aid Fix)

Once we arrive, we don't just slap a fix on the problem. We figure out why it happened in the first place. That's the only way to make sure it doesn't happen again next week.

Most emergencies trace back to one of these causes:

  • Old or damaged wiring (super common in homes built before 1990).
  • An overloaded circuit or outdated panel.
  • Loose connections that built up heat over time.
  • Water damage from leaks, monsoons, or pool issues.
  • DIY work that wasn't done to code.

Our team uses pro tools to find the exact problem fast. Then we offer licensed electrical repair and troubleshooting services that fix it the right way, the first time.

Step 6: Schedule a Full Safety Check

Here's something most folks don't think about: if you had one electrical emergency, there's a good chance other problems are hiding in your walls. The same wiring that caused the spark in your kitchen might also be wearing thin in your bedroom.

I always tell my customers to follow up an emergency call with a full home check. Our complete home electrical inspections walk through every part of your system, find weak spots, and give you a clear plan to make your home safer. It's the cheapest peace of mind you can buy.

What If the Power Just Goes Out?

A power outage isn't always an emergency. Sometimes it's just APS or SRP working on the lines. Other times it's a monsoon. But if your power goes out and your neighbors still have lights, the problem is in YOUR house. That needs an electrician.

I wrote a full guide on this called Power Outage? Here's How Emergency Electricians Handle the Crisis. It walks through what to do, how to know if it's your house or the grid, and how we restore power fast and safely.

How to Prevent the Next Emergency

Most electrical emergencies don't pop up out of nowhere. They build up over months or years. The best way to stop one is to take care of small problems before they grow.

Easy things you can do:

  • Don't ignore breakers that trip more than once.
  • Replace outlets that feel warm or look burnt.
  • Don't run extension cords as a permanent fix.
  • Get your panel checked every 5 to 10 years, especially in older Phoenix homes.
  • Install surge protection to handle our monsoon storms.
