Yes, in almost every case you can add a garage subpanel, and for most Buckeye and West Valley homeowners it is the smarter move once you need more than two or three new circuits out there. A subpanel is a small breaker box fed by one heavy cable from your main panel. From that point on, every new circuit in the garage lands right there instead of running all the way back to the house.
The real question is not whether you can. It is whether your main panel has the room and the capacity to give up. That is where we start every one of these jobs.
What a Garage Subpanel Actually Does for You
People usually call us about a subpanel because the garage has quietly turned into something else. A shop. A gym. A second refrigerator, a freezer, a compressor, and now an EV charger. Two outlets on one fifteen amp circuit does not carry that.
• One feeder instead of six long runs. Cheaper to build and a lot less drywall damage.
• Room to grow. Add a circuit later without opening the main panel again.
• A local shutoff. You can kill power to the whole garage without walking to the house panel.
• Cleaner troubleshooting. When a breaker trips, you know exactly where to look.
What Has to Be True Before We Install a Garage Subpanel
Three things. First, your main panel needs two adjacent open slots for the feeder breaker, or space we can free up safely. Second, the service has to have capacity left after we add the load. We run a load calculation rather than guessing, because guessing is how people end up with a main breaker that trips every time the dryer and the compressor run together.
Third, the panel itself has to be sound. If you have an aging split-bus panel, or one of the brands with a known breaker problem, bolting a subpanel onto it is putting a new roof on a bad foundation. A Buckeye Garage That Needed the Panel Fixed First
We took a call from a homeowner in Buckeye who wanted a subpanel so he could run a welder and a mini split in his garage. Reasonable ask. When we opened the main panel, half the slots were taken up by tandem breakers somebody had stuffed in years earlier, and two of them were in slots the panel was not rated to accept.

The Honest Counterpoint: You Might Not Need One
If all you want is a couple of outlets and better lighting, a subpanel is overkill. Two dedicated 20 amp circuits pulled from the main panel will do the job and cost less to build. We tell people that regularly.
The tipping point is roughly this: if you are adding three or more circuits, or any single large load like an EV charger, a welder, or a mini split, the subpanel pays for itself in labor and gives you room to grow. Below that, run the circuits. An honest residential electrician will tell you which side of that line you are on.
Permits, Grounding, and the Details That Matter
A garage subpanel is permitted work in every West Valley jurisdiction we work in, and it should be. The inspection is not red tape. It is a second set of eyes on the things that matter.
The detail people get wrong most often is the ground and neutral. In a subpanel, the neutral bar has to float, separated from the ground bar, and the feeder has to include a separate equipment ground. Bond them together the way they are bonded in a main panel and you put current on the metal parts of your building. It is a five-second mistake with real consequences, and it is one of the first things any inspector checks.
