Why Does My GFCI Outlet Keep Tripping?

If your GFCI outlet keeps tripping, it is doing its job: it has detected electricity leaking off the circuit somewhere it should not be going. The usual culprits in the West Valley are moisture in an outdoor or garage box, a bad appliance plugged in downstream, too many outlets tied to one GFCI, or a worn-out GFCI that is 15 or 20 years old and has gotten twitchy.

The important part: a GFCI that trips is not broken. A GFCI that will not trip is broken. It watches for current going somewhere other than back down the neutral wire, and the most likely alternate path is a person. It shuts off in about a fortieth of a second.
What a GFCI is actually watching for
A GFCI compares the current going out on the hot wire to the current coming back on the neutral. Those two numbers should match. If even a tiny amount — around 5 milliamps — goes missing, the device assumes that current found another path to ground and it cuts power. That is why GFCIs are required near water: kitchens, bathrooms, laundry, garages, outdoor receptacles, and anything around a pool. In Buckeye and the rest of the West Valley, most of the nuisance trips we get called out for are on the outdoor and garage circuits.
The most common reasons a GFCI outlet keeps tripping
Here is what we actually find when we open things up:
• Moisture in an outdoor box. Monsoon rain, a sprinkler head aimed wrong, or a mister line that drips into a receptacle. Water bridges the gap and off it goes.
• A failing appliance downstream. Old refrigerators, garage freezers, pool pumps, pressure washers and window units are the repeat offenders. Motors develop small winding leaks as they age.
• Too many outlets on one GFCI. One GFCI can protect a whole string of receptacles. Every device on that string contributes a little leakage, and together they can cross the threshold even though nothing is truly faulty.
• A worn-out GFCI. These have internal electronics that age. In Arizona heat, a garage or patio GFCI that is old will start tripping for no reason at all.
• A wiring fault. A nicked wire in a wall, a neutral touching a box, or a shared neutral between circuits will trip it every time.

How to narrow it down before you call
You can do a fair amount of this yourself in fifteen minutes:
• Unplug everything on the circuit, including things in other rooms that might be downstream. Reset the GFCI.
• If it holds with nothing plugged in, plug items back in one at a time, waiting a few minutes between each. The one that trips it is your answer.
• If it trips with nothing plugged in at all, the problem is in the wiring or the device itself, and that is where you stop and call an electrician.
• Check outdoor boxes for water, and make sure in-use covers are actually closed and gasketed.
• Push the TEST button. If nothing happens, that GFCI has failed and needs replacing regardless of anything else.
That last check is the one nobody does. Test your GFCIs twice a year — if the TEST button does not kill the power, the protection is gone even though the outlet still works.
A real example from a Buckeye garage
A homeowner near Verrado had a garage GFCI tripping every couple of days for a month. He had already installed two new GFCIs himself, and both did the same thing. He was convinced the builder had wired something wrong.
We unplugged the garage and it held fine. Plugged things back in one at a time and it made it all the way to the last item — a ten-year-old spare refrigerator he kept out there for drinks. The compressor windings had started leaking to the case, and on a hot afternoon in a garage running 110 degrees that leakage went up enough for the GFCI to catch it. The outlet had been right all three times. He was two parts into a problem that was never the outlet, which is exactly why we look at the whole circuit first. That is the no-upsell approach we have run on since 2006.
The honest counterpoint: it is not always something you can fix
We would be lying if we said every GFCI trip has a tidy cause. Intermittent moisture problems are the worst — the outlet trips on humid mornings and behaves perfectly when we are standing in front of it at 2pm.
And there is a trade-off nobody likes hearing: if you have a garage freezer or an older pool pump, it may keep tripping a properly working GFCI simply because the appliance leaks a little and code still requires the protection. The fix is a newer appliance or a dedicated circuit, not disabling the GFCI. We will not bypass one, ever. If somebody offers to, find another electrician. On the flip side, not every mystery trip means a big rewiring project either — most of what we find is one bad appliance or one wet box.

Can I just replace the GFCI myself and be done?
You can replace one, but if the new one trips the same way, the outlet was never the problem. Work through the unplug-and-reintroduce test first. It costs nothing but time and it tells you whether you are buying a part you need.
Why does my GFCI only trip when it rains?
Water is getting into a box or a fitting somewhere on that circuit. During monsoon season this is our single most common outdoor call. Usually it is a cracked in-use cover, a light fixture with a failed gasket, or an outlet that was never sealed to the stucco properly.
How long do GFCI outlets last in Arizona?
Indoors, 15 to 25 years. In a garage or outdoors in West Valley heat, plan on closer to 10 to 15. Heat is hard on the internal electronics, and a device that is aged out will trip on its own or, worse, stop protecting you entirely.
